Are you a Canadian citizen or permanent resident wanting to reunite with your parents or grandparents in Canada? There are two primary pathways to achieve this: the Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP) and the Super Visa Program.

Parent and Grandparent Program (PGP)

In the past, the PGP operated on a first-come-first-serve basis, but since 2017, it works through an Invitation-to-Apply system. To begin the process, eligible sponsors must submit an “Interest to Sponsor” form during specific intake periods. In 2018, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) aimed to process 10,000 new and complete PGP applications. However, many applications failed due to incompleteness, emphasizing the importance of submitting all required documentation.

Eligibility Requirements for PGP

  • Sponsors must commit to providing financial support for at least 20 years once the sponsored individual becomes a Canadian citizen.
  • A sponsorship agreement must be signed, ensuring financial support if needed.
  • Sponsors in Quebec must sign a specific undertaking.
  • Sponsors must meet the minimum necessary income (MNI) requirement.

Super Visa Program

Introduced in December 2011, the Super Visa Program facilitates hassle-free travel for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. This multi-entry visa allows them to stay for up to two years continuously on the first entry, valid for a period of 10 years. However, it’s important to note that Super Visa holders are not permitted to work during their stay in Canada.

Both the PGP and Super Visa Program offer avenues for family reunification in Canada, each with its own set of requirements and benefits. Whether you opt for permanent residency through PGP or the flexibility of the Super Visa, these programs pave the way for cherished moments with your loved ones in the Great White North.
